DVB102 Week 5 Colour portraits
Colour Portraits

The theme of the fifth weekly task was colour, and more specifically, how to manage colour. The purpose of this task is to explore colour through five different themes all of which, are reflected in a portrait that I made everyday for this week. Just like the task from the week beforehand, I had a lot more creative freedom and room to experiment with creating an image. However, in this week's workshop, the activities we worked on that had a lot to do with watercolours gave me inspiration to create something that is uniquely my style.
Picture used for portrait

For the first day of the colour portraits, the first step I had to take was to print out a stencil of my chosen selfie. The photo that I will be using was taken the prior week before which I thought would be a good sample to use for this activity because of its potential for great results. To process of making my stencil mainly consisted of placing the image on Adobe Illustrator then utilizing image trace in the black & white option. The final step in the stencil, was to remove all the other line backgrounds such as the tree branches that are present in the original photo through. From there, I was ready to start coming up with my daily creative concepts.
Day 1:
Materials used
- Standard white A4 paper
- Nikko finepoint black pen
- Crayola watercolour kit
- Crayola 5 pack multi purpose paint brushes
- Adobe Illustrator

Reflection:
For the first day of the colour portraits, I decided that a gradual progression of the tasks from simple, to more complex methods would be a good approach for me. I decided to make use of the water colour palette that I currently have to paint this blended abstract of the stencil I traced out. This was something that was inspired from the activities of this week's workshop, where we experimented with colour theory. In this case, the colour theory that I was aiming to incorporate was a soft analogous pattern throughout, with the blend of red, orange and yellow. To conclude this first task, I am overall very pleased and that the result that came out lined well the vision that I originally had in my mind.
Day 2:
Materials used:
- red tissue wrapping paper
- orange tissue wrapping paper
- yellow tissue wrapping paper
- white A4 Sheet paper
- standard HB Faber-Castel pencil
- NoteWorks glue pen

Reflection:
The day 2 portrait came about from my water colour portrait. I thought to take an approach to a collage so I bought some tissue wrapping paper to create this portrait. This is particularly more similar to the first one because they are still utilising the same analogous colour palette. And although i am very pleased with the surprisingly detailed outcome of this portrait, I needed to challenge myself more by looking into other more diverse colour palettes.
Day 3:
Materials used:
- 12 x 12 pastel blue sheet paper
- 12 x 12 pastel pink sheet paper
- Nikko fine point black pen
- standard HB Faber-Castel pencil
- small box cutter

Reflection:
This piece of work is by far one of the more time consuming ones. The reason it was so time consuming was because I was physically cutting out holed shapes and trying to make the lines as smooth and as accurate as possible. This was quite a tedious task but nonetheless, I take pride in being able to execute this idea as it was one I came up with more last minute. I achieved what I wanted to achieve by incorporating another bright colour scheme. I chose pastel blue and pink because it was one of the more bright and appealing contrasts. If I were to attempt this task again, the only thing I would change is the outline, the more I look at the final work, the more I realize that getting rid of the black line and cutting out a line to show through a pink would've been much better.

Day 4:
materials used
- Adobe Illustrator

Reflection:
On my fourth day of this colour task, I decided to move my work to Illustrator. Creating my fourth portrait on Illustrator was not only much easier for me, but it was less time consuming and gave me a polished final product. Because of the flexibility throughout the software, I decided to experiment with lines and colour blocking colours, which lead me to choose my two favourite colours, mint green & pink. Overall, I think that this image looks well polished however, it's not the most spectacular. The work reflects the fact that I was experimenting around on what would look good.
Day 5:
Materials Used:
- Adobe Illustrator

Reflection:
This final image is the one that I really am most satisfied with. After five days coming up with ways to creatively show different styles of colour on a portrait, I came to the conclusion of this final piece of work. The main inspiration that lead me on to this image were again, some of the principles of colour blocking to utilize for the light and dark tones, in this case, I used blue as the darker shade & yellow the bright one. To summarize on this final piece of work, i am overall very satisfied as not only does it match one of the desired looks that I had in mind, but it also looks the most professional.
